The Phillies First To 10,000 Losses

It’s no secret that the Phillies are the losingest franchise in sports history but nobody ever wants to looks at why they are the team that they are today. 6,577 that’s the amount of losses the Phillies had from 1883 as the Philadelphia Quakers though there re-branding in 1890 to the Philadelphia Phillies all the way to the year 1965.Teams like the Yankees, Brooklyn Dodgers, and Boston Red Sox would be center holders in the world series contention just because the where a big market team. On June 8, 1965 the landscape of the MLB was changed forever with the addition of the Major League Baseball first year amateur draft. Teams would no longer be able to just buy players. They would have to draft them in reverse order from who had the most losses the previous season. This would help teams like the Phillies go on to have better successes drafting guys like Greg Luzinski, Larry Christenson, and Lonnie Smith in the first round to help build that 1980 championship winning team. Without the Player Draft all time Phillie great Mike Schmidt might have played for the Yankees, Though the Phillies wouldn’t get the #1 overall pick until 1998 when they drafted Pat Burrell with that number one overall pick.

Another path to success by Phillies was the integration of men of color. Jackie Robinson of course leading the pack. The Phillies would hold out and not integrate until April 22, 1957 when the Phillies would pinch run for Solly Hemus in the 8th inning. John Kennedy would become the first of many African-Americans to suit up in a Phillies uniform. This moment would pave the path for greats like, Jimmy Rollins, and Ryan Howard to suit up and play for the franchise 40+ years later.

4,455 that’s the amount of losses the Phillies had from 1966-2020. that’s 2,122 losses less since the events of the first year player draft proving that once teams weren’t able to scout and just buy talent and small market teams were able to draft good talent that teams would get better and since 1966 there have been 24 NEW world series champions. The Phillies had a bad start to their storied franchise but have slowly crawled back from it approaching 10,000 wins only needing 147 more wins to reach the milestone (the last of the teams from the 1800’s to reach said milestone).

The Phillies May not be the greatest team in history but an impressive 7 Pennants and 2 world titles have shaped this franchise forever. As one of the oldest franchise in history the Phillies are 9853-11032 us as Phillies fans can only hope for more success in the future.

Aaron Nola’s Cy Young

Aaron Nola is a 6-2 right handed pitcher from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Originally drafted in 2011 in the 22nd round by the Toronto Blue Jays while still a HS student at Catholic HS in Baton Rouge, He would decline and go to LSU. In 2014 he was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 1st round (7th overall). At 27 Nola has had high success in the majors Debuting just a year after his 2nd draft year. July 21st, 2015 was the beginning of the Aaron Nola era in Philadelphia. At age 22 his first start was just as good as advertised, putting up 6 innings allowing 5 hits 1 walk 1 earned run and 6 strikeouts. this would become a normal for Aaron Nola. In his 6 years of being the top dog in Philly he’s posted a win-loss record of 58-40. An era of 3.47, in 842.2 innings pitched, with 922 strikeouts, and a WHIP of 1.164. His career WAR is 21.7.

Aaron Nola is a former all star, in 2018 was third in the Cy Young voting and 13th in MVP voting. In 2020 he was 7th in Cy Young voting. Aaron is a rare talent in my opinion that is still poised for a Cy Young award. It’s only a matter of time before the ace of the Phillies Starts making his rounds as one of the all time Phillie greats along side the likes of Jim Bunning, Steve Carlton, Curt Schilling, Cole Hamels, and Roy Halliday. With some of the best coaches he has worked with in his career so far. Its only up from here for the Louisiana native. As Spring Training swiftly approaches will Nola be able to help lead his team to the post season? Possibly a League Pennant? Only time will tell.

Nola’s contract with the Phillies is set to expire at the end of the 2022 season if they decide not to pick up his 2023 option and I don’t see why they wouldn’t. Nola could see a spike in value potentially being signed to a 6 figure deal with either the Phillies or another team after 2023. At the end of his current contract he will be 30 so a 5 year deal worth 100 million wouldn’t be something the Phillies haven’t done before offering catcher JT Realmuto 5 years 110 million. Aaron Nola is worth every penny and I hope he’s a Phillie for life and I know the fanbase will back me up on that one.

J.T. Realmuto Homecoming King?

The Phillies on Friday offered J.T. a three figure deal. The deal was reported 5-Years 100+ million dollars. This was the reported deal after former Washington Nationals catcher Kurt Suzuki (37) signed a 1-Year deal with the Angles worth 1.5 million dollars. With catchers like Mike Zunino and James McCann off the table its looking more and more like the Phillies might just end up retaining the fanbase proclaimed “Best Catcher In Baseball”.

The Phillies in 2019 traded Sixto Sanchez, Jorge Alfaro, Southpaw Will Stewart and international money for the then 28 year old catcher J.T. Realmuto. Would be a huge disappointment if Owner John Middleton can’t come to an agreement with the big name catcher. Not only would it stir chaos in the fanbase but it wouldn’t make their house hold name (Bryce Harper) exactly happy. Last year he yelled up to the top of Citizens Bank Park to John and said “SIGN HIM” obviously talking about JT.

It’s no surprise the catcher wants to make a change for his position but it was reported his asking price is 6-Years 180 million dollars. My personal opinion, no 30 year old catcher is worth that much. 120 million for 5-6 years is a fair offer to me. Getting JT signed could be a stepping stone in breaking the 10 year playoff drought. 2011 was the last time the Phillies made the playoffs, it was also the last time they had the winning season. 2021 will be a true test for John and company. The fanbase is getting anxious and is about ready to give John Middleton the 1993 Mitch Williams treatment. Figure it out John. We’re not gonna wait much longer.

Welcome To Philly Archie!

Yesterday the Phillies and Archie Bradley came to an agreement on a 1-Year 6 million dollar deal. A deal seemingly fit for both sides. For Archie its a way to prove he’s worthy of a long term deal later on down the road. At the age of 28 Archie will look to help carry the load of the Phillies bullpen as they look to do a complete 180 from last years lackluster performance having one of the worst bullpens in MLB history. Smart move by the Phillies that easily makes the Pen much better. I see Dave making more moves like this as we head into the final few weeks leading up to Spring Training. Perhaps signing a Notorious Shortstop, The BCIB, or even anther reliever. Anything to help this ballclub succeed in a tough NL East Division is a good deal to me.

When the Phillies deal was announced on Twitter this is what Bradley had to say about the deal:

Phillies and Andrew Benintendi?

The Phillies have reportedly been in contact with the Boston Red Sox about current left fielder Andrew Benintendi. My personal Opinion, it’s a great idea on paper but who are they willing to give up? It’s was reported by twitter user gfstarr1 That they would ship the Phillies 2016 #1 overall draft pick Mickey Moniak and a Triple-A arm for the 2018 World Champion left fielder. Benintendi is coming off his worst career season, with a -0.2 WAR in 39 at bats, 4 hits, and batting average of .103 far beyond the dreaded Mendoza Line. It may have only been a sample size but its still statistically his worst season. It’s an interesting idea to think the Red Sox would be willing to part with the 26 year old as they look to develop a young championship winning team with guys like the 25 year old Bobby Dalbec.

The Phillies don’t have a lot of depth in their minor league system. So you’d think Dave Dombrowski would like to save up and build up some young talent. The only notable players the Phillies have in their farm system in my opinion are SS Bryson Stott, SP Spencer Howard, SP Mick Abel, and SP Adonis Medina. There are some other players that could spark some interest in clubs like Phillies SP Enyel De Los Santos. However they aren’t nearly as loaded as other teams in the league. Would be wise not to put all your eggs in one basket considering the Phillies are not contenders for the Commissioners Trophy.

The Phillies could use Benintendi in many ways. 34 year old Andrew McCutchen is on his final year of his 3 year deal with the club. The contract worth 50 million dollars also includes a 2022 option but getting Benintendi could spell the end to McCutchen and the Phillies after the 2021 season. My best guess for this trade would be that the Phillies would put Benintendi in CF for 2021 and move him to LF in 2022. Adam Haseley or Roman Quinn would be used as bench bats or platoon in LF with McCutchen for the season. This team has a lot of ground to cover as we approach the beginning of 2021’s Spring Training.
